Mark Thompson
Join us on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 “The Battle of the Falaise Gap: Was it ‘The Campaign that Should have Won World War II?” 1:15 pm, Brookhaven at Lexington and by Zoom Presented by Mark Thompson, retired Harvard Professor, author, and specialist in game theory and decision science Around midnight on August 12/13, 1944, Lieutenant General George Patton telephoned his immediate superior, Lieutenant General Omar Bradley, asking him to allow his Third Army to drive thirteen miles northward from the village of Argentan in Lower Normandy to the village of Falaise – which would basically complete the encircling of the German Seventh Army. Bradley, in what was called by one historian “probably the most costly, controversial order given in the European theatre during World War Two,” forbade the move. Another historian judged that, had Bradley agreed to Patton’s request, the Allies, by the end of October 1944, would have won the war. How would decision scientists, 80-plus years later, explain and judge the issuance of this order? As a professor on the faculties of the Harvard School of Public Health and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, Mark Thompson taught courses on health economics, social program evaluation, game theory, negotiations, and decision science. He has been a visiting professor in France and Germany. In 2020, Professor Thompson published Disputed Decisions of World War II: Decision Science and Game Theory Perspectives. This year, Professor Thompson is publishing World War II Battles Reconsidered: Game Theory and Decision Science Perspectives on Gazala, El Alamein, Falaise, and Arnhem. Professor Thompson seeks to help future decision makers to make better decisions and to achieve better outcomes. Live at Brookhaven at Lexington and via Zoom, free and open to the public. Coffee and conversation at 12:45, program begins at 1:15 p.m. Use This Zoom Link |
